El pan de todas las mesas

Blindly toasted

Y apostaba a la certeza

And bet on the certainty

Del hambre saciada luego.

Of later satisfied hunger.

Con el paso de unos largos

With the passing of some long

Siglos de rasgo muy duro

Centuries of very hard lines

El hacha extendió su apuro

The axe extended its rush

A las selvas en letargo.

To the dormant forests.

Y allí comenzó el amargo

And there began the bitter

Tiempo, en que el bosque entreabierto,

Time, when the partially open forest

Abrió la puerta al desierto,

Opened the door to the desert

Y el desierto a la sequía.

And the desert to the drought.

Y la sequía a los días

And the drought to the days

De chubascos tan inciertos.

Of uncertain showers.

El hacha se hizo violenta

The axe became violent

Y ya no midió el hachazo:

And no longer measured the blow:

Cortó de manera cruenta

It cut in a brutal manner

Dejando los bosques rasos.

Leaving the forests bare.

Cayó el árbol a su paso,

The tree fell in its path,

Muerto de mala fortuna

Unluckily dead

Sin utilidad ninguna,

Without any use,

El bosque entró en cautiverio

The forest entered captivity

Pareciendo un cementerio

Resembling a cemetery

Calcinado por la luna.

Scorched by the moon.

El hacha es un reloj hueco

The axe is an empty clock

Que marca la hora del bosque:

That marks the hour of the forest:

Y aunque de furia se enrosque

And even if it twists in fury

El páramo más reseco,

The driest wasteland,

Y cambie el río sus ecos

And the river changes its echoes

Y el leñador su prenombre,

And the lumberjack his given name,

No cambia lo que por cierto

It doesn't change what indeed

Consigue el hacha en su nombre:

The axe achieves in its name:

El bosque precede al hombre

The forest precedes man

Pero le sigue el desierto.

But the desert follows him.
