Yo era un purretito cuando murió mi viejo;

She broke her back at the foot of the washbasin,

Por míseras monedas con que calmaba apenas

The cruel bitterness of our situation.

Fui creciendo a la bartola, y a mis años juveniles

Que la matan a disgustos y recién, cuando se muere,

They kill her with sorrows and only, when she dies,

Se arrepienten y la lloran y comprenden su valor.

They regret, cry, and understand her worth.
